2012:
|
Our first presentation, on August 4th, 2010, featured Theresa Kelly performing Eudora Welty's "Why I Live at the P.O."
Premiered in August 2010, First Person Singular is a dramatic reading series "that means to redefine not only the literary event but the literary as such" --Greil Marcus, The Believer. Bringing dynamic performers to timeless material in all-original programs, the series places special emphasis on the richness, variety, and vitality of the American voice. From August Wilson to Warren Zevon, from a 60's girl-group song recital to an all-female reading of Glengarry Glen Ross, First Person Singular showcases the best of our culture in unique and unexpected ways. Established at Pegasus Books in Berkeley, First Person Singular has given encore presentations at The Museum of the African Diaspora and The Make-Out Room in San Francisco. HOOT! - a monthly, themed songfest and open mic - is housed at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Albany. First Person Singular was recently honored with an Outstanding Event Award from the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association, and a Best of the East Bay award from The East Bay Express: "Best Remixed Literary Event."
"Literary event" doesn't have to be an oxymoron.
